Off metal struck in pewter!

This is a reproduction of the 1792 “Birch Cent” designed and engraved by Birch (his first name is still unknown) as a pattern for our first one-cent coins. It carries an edge inscription “TO BE ESTEEMED * BE USEFUL”. It’s about the size of a modern half Dollar. The size was reduced to what we now know as the “large cent” size to allow for production costs.
