Struck over a modern Jefferson Nickel, this was an inexpensive alternative to Ron’s hand carved nickels that still demand prices of $400 and up. Remnants of the undertype are still visible. These expanded slightly when struck and are slightly larger than the nickels they were made from.They were discontinued in 2000 when Gallery Mint started striking them in 90% silver at actual size.
